This is also true for the user profile properties (db table external_entities.NAME) in JIRA 4.4.5. After using the rename script all properties are lost and the user is not able to add a new avatar because JIRA doesn't respond while trying to assign the avatar.
After changing the avatar.user and external_entities.NAME to the new user, everything is fine now.
